Cannabis Terminology and Slang #2

If you’re new, or even a veteran stoner, it can be overwhelming trying to read and learn about cannabis without understanding all of the lingo.

Welcome to the second BudSeed Weed word weds.

If you have a word or phrase I’ve missed, something you’ve heard recently for the first time, or anything else you’d like included in next week’s post, please don’t hesitate to comment below. Cheers Buds.

  1. DWC – Deep Water Culture: Refers to a growing technique commonly used to grow cannabis. A hydroponic process of growing in which the plants roots are suspended in water. Air stones or water pumps are used to create bubbles within the water to maintain high levels of dissolved oxygen (so the plants don’t drown).
  2. Ebb and Flow a.k.a. Flood and Drain: Refers to a grown technique in which a system floods the roots of the plants with water periodically using a water pump connected to a timer device. The water is pumped to flood the root zone, and then drained back into a central reservoir on short cycles (typically a few minutes).
  3. Flush/Flushing: The process of rinsing the reservoir or plants roots using pure water in order to clean/remove all nutrients and contaminants which may be present in the root zone or reservoir.
  4. Foliar Feeding: A technique for feeding plants in which water and nutrients are sprayed directly on to the leaves. The plants are able to absorb nutrients not only through their roots, but also through their epidermis and stomata.
  5. LST – Low Stress Training: A method of training plants in which the stems are gently bent and tied down in order to change the shape and growth pattern of the plant. LST enablers growers to even out the canopy, increase yields by adding more bud sites, and reduce larf.
  6. Net Cup / Net Basket / Grow Cup: A plastic basket or slitted cup used to hold the growing medium used by various growing methods. (hydroton, rockwool, etc.)
  7. Hydroton: Small round boiled clay rocks that are great at holding and absorbing water. Hydroton is one of the most common growing medium bases used in net cups for growing hydroponic cannabis.
  8. Nute-burn: Nutrient Burn; When plants receive too much, or incorrectly balanced nutrients the tips of the fan leaves will turn yellow. This is known as nute-burn.
  9. Pop/Popping (seeds): When a seed first opens, its ‘popped’. ‘I soaked all my Budseeds last night and they all popped’.
  10. RO Water: Reverse Osmosis Water. Water which has been filtered using a reverse osmosis water filter, which removes almost all nutrients and minerals from the water. RO water allows for a ‘clean slate’ in which growers can add desired nutrients to the water for their plants.
